    Zombie Preparedness Manual

    (and other natural disasters)

    ·         Try to maintain a Positive Mental Attitude (PMA)
    o   You need a “will to survive”
    o   Be motivated
    o   Stay calm and determined
    o   Use good judgement
    ·         Examples of Stressors are:
    o   Fear
    o   Cold/Heat
    o   Thirst, Hunger, Fatigue
    o   Boredom
    o   Loneliness
    o   Isolation
    ·         Stress Relievers
    o   Having a buddy with you
    o   Training in First Aid and CPR – Online!
    o   Wilderness First Aid (WFA) Training
    §  Can take an REI class in this.
    o   Become a Wilderness First Aid Responder (WFR)
    ·         Do not dismiss any injury no matter how insignificant
    o   Because, in general, sanitation around you in an emergency is likely to be bad
    ·         How to Shelter Yourself in an Emergency
    o   Cover Windows to retain heat with cardboard or even newspaper.
    ·         In cold environments
    o   Close off unused areas
    ·         Use a camp stove inside?
    o   Make sure you have proper ventilation or you will die from carbon monoxide poisoning.
    ·         Make sure all needed resources are within reach and available for use.
    ·         Need to camp outside?
    o   Pick a place as flat as possible
    o   Camp on a clearing, hilltop or lake shore where you can be easily seen by search and rescue helicopters.
    ·         Principles of Survival
    o   Get Down
    o   Get Out
    o   Seal Up



    ·         Supply List
    o   Fire starters
    §  Magnesium Stick – shave magnesium off and spark it
    §  Flint and Steel – practice using it
    §  Old Man’s Beard Moss (hangs from trees in Northwest) – Good fire starter when dry.
    §  Waterproof matches
    o   PMA – Positive Mental Attitude
    o   A set of dry clothes
    o   Bandana – several uses such as tourniquet, water filtration
    o   Warmth – fire, heaters, blankets, coats, gloves, hat
    §  Make sure flue is open when starting a fire in a fireplace
    o   Purified water
    o   Vision – extra pair of glasses
    o   “Bug-out” bag full of survival stuff you can just grab and get out of danger with and know you can survive 3 to 14 days.
    o   One gallon of water per person per day is required.
    §  Water is very heavy. Need a filtration system
    ·         Straws (Only good for one person)
    ·         Gravity filters (Can do 10 liters of water at a time)
    ·         Chemical filters (Water will taste terrible after adding chemicals)
    ·         Boil water
    ·         UV Light Filtration
    o   Still might need a bandana to pour water into first to filter out sediments because UV filtration can’t hand water with a lot of sediments in it.
    o   Water Storage
    §  Collect rain fall
    §  Filter water
    §  Iodine can be used to sterilize water but it takes 2-3 hours to make water safe to drink using iodine.
    §  Chlorine dioxide tablets
    §  Water canisters – usually made from plastic

    o   Food – Perishable/Non-Perishable
    §  Canned/Freeze Dried Food
    ·         Buy a food dehydrator – a lot cheaper than buy dehydrated food.
    o   Bananas, apples, veggies, beef jerky are all good dehydrated
    §  Need 3 days of non-perishable food. Will soon be changed to 14 days of non-perishable food after failed emergency preparedness exercise last June, 2016.
    §  Can Opener
    §  Choose food your family will actually eat.
    §  Salt free crackers
    §  Snickers bar for diabetics
    §  Avoid food that make you thirsty. High in salt or sugar

    o   Non-Food Items
    §  Crank Radio
    §  Cell Phone
    §  Extra Portable charger
    §  Batteries
    §  Bright colored clothing
    §  Can of florescent orange paint. (Don’t use red paint- People think red means ignore it)
    §  Survival whistles/Air horns
    §  Ground to air
    ·         Flairs
    ·         Mirrors to reflect sun with so people know where you are from the air.
    §  “Go To Zero” Solar Panel chargers

    ·         Preparing for the environment in an emergency
    §  Layer clothing you wear
    §  Do not wear too baggy or too tight of clothing.
    §  Wear down of primaloft (fake down)
    §  Wear wool or synthetic clothing. Do not wear cotton clothing because cotton retains too much water.
    §  Wear cheap gaters to protect your skin on your legs in brush

    ·         Planning Ahead
    §  Illumination – flashlights, waterproof matches, fire starters, flairs
    §  Water
    §  Food
    §  Navigation (compass, GPS device)
    §  Fire
    §  Insulation
    §  Repair Kits
    §  First Aid
    §  Sun Protection
    §  Emergency Shelter
    §  Extra Batteries – preferably rechargeable
    §  Waterproof bags
    §  Clotting sponge for people who have blood clotting problems
    §  Moist towelettes for sanitation
    §  Garbage bags with ties – Double duty kind
    ·         For portable toilet use
    §  Scented Baby Wipes so you can smell nice with minimal water available
    §  Wrench/pliers
    ·         Know where your water and gas main are so you can shut them off when needed.
    ·         Local Maps
    ·         Cash
    ·         Sleeping Bag/warm blankets
    ·         Change of clothing
    o   Synthetic clothing – not cotton
    ·         Camp Stove and cook sets
    §  “Whisper Lite International” Stove allows you to use any fuel in it.
    ·         BIolite fuel
    o   Sticks/twigs/wood
    o   Mini-Turbine generator
    §  No Guns (There are exceptions)
    §  Hand weapons
    ·         Machete
    ·         Hunting knife

    ·         For emergency preparedness answer the following:
    §  Can you live from what is in your cupboard for three to fourteen days straight?
    §  Can you survive unplugged?
    §  Where can you go that is safer than where you live in an emergency?
    ·         Do you have a family meet up location?
    §  Do you know what wild plants are edible?
